Getting your driver’s license is an exciting milestone and a major step toward independence. If you’re planning to drive in Ontario, it’s essential to understand the graduated licensing system introduced in April 1994. At Lucky Star Driving School, we’re here to guide you through each stage of the process to ensure you’re prepared, confident, and road-ready.
Minimum Age Requirement
To begin the process of getting a license in Ontario, you must be at least 16 years old. From that point on, you will enter a three-stage licensing system designed to help new drivers gain the experience and skills needed to drive safely and responsibly.

Stage 1: Getting Your G1 License
Step 1 – Study the Driver’s Handbook
Before you can apply for your G1 license, you need to study the Official MTO Driver’s Handbook. This book contains all the information required to pass the theoretical test. You can find it at most bookstores, convenience stores, Ministry of Transportation (MTO) centers, and several other locations.
Step 2 – Write the G1 Knowledge Test
On or after your 16th birthday, once you’ve studied the handbook, visit the nearest MTO office to take the G1 written exam. To do this, you must:
Bring $159.75 for the application and test fees.
Provide two valid pieces of identification (e.g., passport, health card, birth certificate).
Once you pass the G1 test, you’ll receive your G1 license and begin the process of becoming a fully licensed driver.
G1 License Restrictions and Rules
While holding a G1 license, you are considered a beginner and must follow certain rules designed to help you gain safe driving experience:
You must always drive with an accompanying driver who has at least 4 years of G-class experience and a blood alcohol level below 0.05%.
You are not allowed to drive between 12:00 AM and 5:00 AM.
Driving on highways with speed limits over 80 km/h (including all 400-series highways) is prohibited, unless you’re with a licensed driving instructor.
You must maintain a 0.00% blood alcohol level at all times.
You cannot carry more passengers than seat belts in your vehicle.
Accelerated Learning with Lucky Star Driving School
If you attend an MTO-approved driving course such as the one we offer at Lucky Star Driving School, you’ll be eligible to reduce the waiting period to take your first road test from 12 months to just 8 months. Our expert instructors provide personalized, professional training to prepare you for real-world driving and your G2 road test.
Stage 2: G2 License – Gaining More Independence
After holding your G1 for at least 8 to 12 months and passing your first road test (G1 exit test), you will receive your G2 license.
G2 License Conditions
G2 drivers enjoy more freedom but still have to follow some safety regulations:
You must maintain a 0.00% blood alcohol level at all times.
You must not carry more passengers than there are working seat belts in the vehicle.
As a G2 driver, you can drive without an accompanying driver and are allowed to travel on highways and at night. This stage is designed to give you more independence while still promoting safe driving habits.
Final Stage: Full G License
After at least 12 months with your G2 license, you can take the final road test (G2 exit test). This advanced test includes expressway driving and tests your skills in real-world scenarios. Once passed, you’ll receive your full G license with no driving restrictions.
